Explore Our Buildings- The Granary
This granary was originally located in Diggins, Mo. It dates back prior to the Civil War. A granary is used to store winnowed (after the chaff is removed) grain. Today it is used to store tools and other artifacts. On the backside wood is stored for all of the farmstead fireplaces and outdoor fires. By using a crosscut saw and the sawbuck wood can be cut just the right size for the fireplaces. Wood was also used for open outdoor fires for cooking and laundry.
To do the weeks laundry, water is heated in a large kettle over the outdoor fire. The hot water is transferred to the wash tubs. Using a washboard and lye soap the dirty clothes are scrubbed clean. Once the clothes have been scrubbed they are rinsed and wrung in a separate tub. Clothes were then hung on a line to dry or laid across bushes if a line was not available.
